Job Summary
The Ocean Bottom Seismometer Instrument Center (OBSIC) at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for an OBSIC Staff Seismologist to join the Geology & Geophysics Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
OBSIC provides Ocean Bottom Seismographs (OBS), and the technical support to operate them, to the academic research community. You will join a group (https://obsic.whoi.eduhttps://obsic.whoi.edu/) committed to advancing the performance and reliability of seafloor seismographs in order to support discovery of the earth's internal structure and its dynamic processes such as earthquake faulting and volcanism. Advances in technology (autonomous timing, optical and acoustic telemetry, sensor shielding and burial, datalogger and seismometer performance) and algorithm development (removal of oceanographic-related noise brought about by infragravity waves and seafloor currents), as well as new opportunities to improve our understanding of OBS/oceanography interactions (by adding oceanographic sensors and via dedicated experiments) provide the opportunity for an ambitious investigator to drive improvements in the quality of seismic data acquired on the seafloor.
The Staff Seismologist will be a critical part of the OBSIC leadership team, and will participate in meetings of the OBSIC Operations Sub-Committee and in activities such as OBS symposia, and IRIS-organized Seismic Instrumentation Technology Symposia (SITS) and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM). They will represent OBSIC at national and international scientific meetings, and will participate in OBSIC outreach activities both locally and at national meetings such as the Fall AGU Meeting. They will be encouraged to establish an independent research program that is broadly supportive of OBSIC's goals.
The internal working title for this position could be either Research Associate III or Research Specialist. The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience.
Essential Functions
* Archive OBS data and related metadata at the IRIS DMC.
* Analyze MUSTANG quality control metrics generated at the IRIS DMC.
* Develop and apply QA/QC metrics for seafloor seismic data.
* Assess data quality using ambient-noise PSD PDFs and synthetic seismograms.
* Orient the horizontal components of seafloor-deployed seismometers.
* Calculate compliance corrections for broadband OBS.
* Calculate seismometer tilt corrections for broadband OBS.
* Analyze calibration data and update metadata for seismometers and pressure sensors.
* Prepare data QA/QC reports for the OBSIC Operations Sub-Committee
The Staff Seismologist will be responsible for archiving all data acquired through OBSIC at the IRIS Data Management Center (DMC). They will carry out quality-assessment of both field-data and test-data generated in-house. Data-quality assessment tasks include both in-house analyses specific to OBS data and review of MUSTANG data quality control metrics generated at the IRIS DMC. These and other QA/QC products will inform OBSIC operational decisions and provide the OBSIC Operations Sub-Committee with an independent assessment of performance. The Staff Seismologist will be the point person for all data-related queries from the user community. They will be responsible for analysis of sensor calibration measurements, and will maintain up-to-date calibration information for all OBSIC instrumentation. On completion of OBS experiments, the staff seismologist will use established software to orient the horizontal components of seafloor seismometers and calculate seafloor compliance and seismometer tilt corrections. These additional metadata will be archived at the DMC. The Staff Seismologist will use our improved understanding of OBS performance to provide advice on OBS experiment design and on the design of new OBS. They will assist in mobilizing/demobilizing sea-going seismic experiments, and will sail on occasional OBSIC cruises.
Education & Experience
Required Qualifications:
* PhD in seismology, geophysics or related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience preferred.
* Master's degree in related field, or Bachelor's degree in related field plus 3 years' related experience, or Bachelor's degree in non-related field plus 5 years' related experience, or Associates degree in related field plus 6 years' related experience.
* Extensive experience collecting, processing, and analyzing local/regional/global seismic data.
* Comprehensive knowledge of passive-source seismology.
* Comprehensive knowledge of modern seismic data analysis techniques and tools.
* Comprehensive knowledge of seismic data (SEED, PHP, SEGY) and metadata formats (dataless SEED, StationXML).
* Excellent programming skills (C/C++, Python, Matlab, JavaScript, shell scripts).
* Experience with heterogeneous computing environments (Mac/PC/LINUX platforms).
* Excellent communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
* Experience writing and presenting reports, publications, and proposals.

* Appropriate academic background or its equivalent relevant work experience, enhanced by more than 15 years of increasingly successful and creative achievement. * Proficiency with ObsPy python toolbox for seismology.

* Experience with machine learning as applied to seismic data.
Special Requirements
* Must work well in a coordinated fashion within a team, both in the lab and at sea.
* Participate in occasional sea-going experiments; typical cruise durations are ~30 days or less.
* At sea, must have the ability to work constructively and communicate clearly with the science team and marine crew.
* Must have a valid US driver's license.
* Must have a valid passport or be eligible for a passport.
* Must have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be eligible for a TWIC.
