Twenty years ago Sunday a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred south of
Seattle. One person died and approximately 400 people were injured. There
was damage from Seattle to Olympia with widespread landslides and
liquefaction.

We highlight this historical earthquake today in collaboration with the
ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system. If you live in King,
Pierce, or Thurston County in Washington State and have opted in to receive
test messages, you will receive a TEST Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) today
at 11AM as a public demonstration of the ShakeAlert earthquake early
warning system. More information on how to opt in is available at
mil.wa.gov/alerts

A powerpoint and animation have been prepared with additional details about
this earthquake and ShakeAlert.
