What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandia's Geomechanics Department is seeking a dedicated and hardworking R&D, Geosciences Engineer who is an experienced geoscientist with passion and interest in geologic site characterization and geomechanical testing. The selected candidate will support and lead a wide range of national security projects such as nuclear non-proliferation, energy security and climate security. Are you looking to support innovative and creative research? This exciting opportunity could be the one for you!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Analyze data and publish reports or journal papers
• Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers including geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, and other types of scientists and engineers
• Plan and conduct geologic/geophysical site characterization fieldwork or geomechanical laboratory experiments
• Propose and lead various projects

About Our Team

The Geomechanics Department addresses cross-cutting issues in the geosciences and geoengineering related to rock mass characterization, rock mass mechanics, development of numerical codes and numerical simulations, validation of material models and design procedures, and rock mass site monitoring. Supported by combinations of laboratory work and in situ observations, the Geomechanics Department emphasizes: characterization of natural fracture systems; identification and modeling of rock deformation and failure processes; laboratory determinations of thermomechanical and transport properties of competent rock and natural fractures, including studies of coupled effects; extrapolation of laboratory measurements to field conditions; in situ stress measurements and evaluation of in situ boundary conditions; and laboratory and bench-scale validation studies.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
