When science meets industry - a special session that walks the line!
Dear friends and colleagues (Apologies for cross-posting),
We hope you have all been well during this difficult year.
We'd like to invite you to a special session dedicated to the output of high-end national and international projects from around the world. The coming ESC meeting would have been held in Corfu, Greece, but will be online this fall (Sep. 19-24, https://www.erasmus.gr/microsites/1193). Although not coming together this year is unfortunate, it's also made it more affordable and risk-free for more people from overseas to attend, which may lend a global character to the event.
Our session is called "When science meets industry: Advances in engineering seismology stemming from practice". People who work in this industry-academia interface have long shaped (and are shaping) the state of the art by making impactful advances through solving real-life problems. We thought it would be great to get such folks from various companies, organisations, research agencies, universities etc. together, and showcase/foster such fruitful collaborations.
We would like to invite you and your groups/firms/organisations to present your work in such a context. It could be on overviews/lessons learnt from past projects or challenges/findings from the ongoing ones. We are copying our session description below. Abstracts (<300 words) are due this Saturday 15 May! There is no full paper for ESC, only stand-alone abstracts and a presentation/poster on the day.
Please also spread the word to anyone you think might like it!
We hope to "see" you all in September, and walk the science-industry line together!

Session 31: When science meets industry: Advances in engineering seismology stemming from practice

In recent years, the challenges faced in major industrial projects have provided a springboard for research and innovation that have brought about numerous advances in the Engineering and Seismological communities. In the US, it has been the case for a long time that cutting-edge research in engineering seismology does not only originate in a purely academic context but also from practice in large-scale projects between academia and industry aimed at solving real casespecific challenges, not least in the domain of seismic hazard assessment. In more recent years, large national and international industrial projects in Europe have also begun to shape the stateofthe-art in science, technology and practice, developing new approaches and innovative techniques in several topics, including ground motion models, uncertainty quantification, site-specific hazard assessment, site characterisation, site effects and attenuation, but also seismic hazard of low seismicity regions, induced seismicity, and more.
This session aims to bring together the Engineering and Seismological communities and create a platform for discussion and exchange concerning recent advances in any aspect of engineering seismology where innovation in data, models or methods has been driven by the needs of industry. We welcome contributions from academics and practitioners, national bureaux rendering expert services, organisations from the energy and other sectors, leading companies that practice research-led consulting. We also seek to hear from those developing new products, sensors, or software that are changing the state-of-the-art and to discuss exciting new possibilities for applications.
