SCEC Workshop: Research Mentor Training

Date: July 8 & 9, 2021 (09:00-11:00 PDT each day)

Research mentor training has proven to be effective in increasing knowledge, skills, and behavior with mentor-mentee relationships. This workshop is based upon an evidence-based, interactive approach that engages mentors and mentees in collective problem solving and connects them with resources to optimize their mentoring practices. The content is based on the curricula Entering Mentoring developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMERhttps://cimerproject.org/), and is for mentors of all disciplines and at different career stages.

This training is designed to help mentors develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships, which optimize the success of both mentors and mentees, in addition to investing in your personal growth and professional development. Furthermore, culturally responsive interactions between mentors and mentees can help historically underrepresented mentees successfully progress in their research careers, becoming effective mentors, scientific leaders, and research team members of the future.

Selected participants will explore approaches and resources to advancing their practice in areas including:

* Aligning Expectations
* Addressing Equity and Inclusion
* Assessing Understanding
* Maintaining Effective Communication

Anyone in the SCEC community who is interested in enhancing their mentoring skills and relationships is invited to participate in this two-day (two hours each day) training, which will be held via Zoom. For more information, see the workshop website: https://www.scec.org/workshops/2021/mentor-training.
