Hi,

1- I am trying to access waveform data from station AU.MCQ, which was
the closest to the 2004-12-23T14:59:04 M8.2 Macquarie Island earthquake.
According to your website, the station was opened in June 2004, but data
availability is from 2005-01-11 (see below):

curl -o MCQ_availability.txt
'http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/availability/1/extent?net=AU&sta=MCQ&start=2004-01-01&end=2005-12-24&format=text&includerestricted=true&nodata=404'

#Network Station Location Channel Quality SampleRate Earliest Latest
Updated TimeSpans Restriction
AU MCQ -- BHZ M 20.0 2005-01-11T13:41:40.000000Z
2005-12-24T00:00:00.000000Z 2017-06-15T22:55:35Z 1192 OPEN

2- My waveform data requests have all returned code 404 for "no data":

curl -o test.ms
'http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/dataselect/1/query?net=AU&sta=MCQ&loc=*&cha=BHZ&start=2004-12-23&end=2004-12-24'.

3- However, the ISC-EHB catalogue has time picks at MCQ for the
Macquarie earthquake and the other earthquakes in that sequence.

4- Where can i obtain the waveform data? Are you able to provide a
reason while data previous to 2005-01-11 at MCQ aren't available?

kind regards

Sandra

    Hi Sandra,

My guess is that the earlier data was packaged up some other way, that wasn't easily recoverable into a full archive. (If data got packaged into some event-based datasets, for example, that would only represent a few tiny slices of the full data.)

If the data is available in some other form, the place to start would be the network operator (listed at https://fdsn.org/networks/detail/AU/), in this case Geoscience Australia (https://www.ga.gov.au/).

    Cheers,
    Adam
