Colleagues,

You are invited to attend a workshop on the use of fiber optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for infrastructure engineering and subsurface imaging applications on October 21-22, 2021. This workshop is being organized by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure Equipment Facility at the University of Texas at Austin (NHERI@UTexas; https://utexas.designsafe-ci.org/), in conjunction with the U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Center (ERDC) and the University of California, Berkeley. The workshop will be held at Louisiana State University's Center for River Studies, in Baton Rouge, LA. All workshop presentations, and hopefully at least part of the field demonstrations, will be available online via Zoom for those who are not able to attend in person.

The DAS workshop will be partitioned into two main parts: (1) technical presentations, and (2) field testing demonstrations. The technical presentations will take place on Thursday, 21 October from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Presentations will cover the basics of DAS with many example applications on diverse topics such as infrastructure health monitoring, subsurface imaging at various scales in both terrestrial and offshore environments, military/homeland security, and reservoir flow monitoring. NHERI@UTexas personnel will also discuss NSF shared use policies for their new DAS interrogator and large mobile shaker trucks. The field demonstrations will take place on Friday, 22 October from 7:30 AM - 2:00 PM. The main field demo will illustrate DAS acquisition on a section of Mississippi River levee in Black Hawk, Louisiana, where approximately 2 km of fiber optic cable has been installed in both surface and borehole arrays as a means to image the levee at high spatial resolution and monitor seepage. A second field demo will illustrate DAS acquisition for vertical seismic profiling in 1.5-km deep well instrumented with fiber. In both cases, one of the NHERI@UTexas mobile shaker trucks will be used as the source of dynamic excitation.

We welcome participation from individuals in all disciplines and sectors (e.g., academic, industry, government) who are interested in DAS research. Travel support is available for a number of academic participants, with funding preference given to those who are interested in submitting research proposals to the NSF Engineering for Civil Infrastructure (ECI) program (or any other NSF program). Workshop registration is required. Please use the following link: https://forms.gle/9X1em5fkR9YP1K5P7. Additional details, including a list of presenters and topics for the technical portion of the workshop, will be provided once the program has been finalized.

We would like to express special thanks to our colleagues Kenichi Soga and Peter Hubbard from UC Berkeley, Dan Costley and John Murphy from ERDC, Dante Fratta from the University of Wisconsin, and Clint Wilson from LSU, all of whom have been instrumental in helping to plan the workshop and secure permission for the levee field demonstrations. We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District for allowing access to the Black Hawk levee.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the workshop. Regards,
