Job Description
The Research and Development Group for Seafloor Observatory, Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT) (Director: Takane Hori), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is soliciting applications for a Researcher (Ⅱ) position.

[Research Description]
The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting and promoting one or more of the following research activities depending on his/her expertise and aptitudes.

1) Research related to the seafloor real-time crustal deformation observation system that JAMSTEC is currently implementing and will be expanding in the future, involving the implementation of tiltmeters and fiber-optic strain meters using seafloor boreholes, among other activities.
1a) Instrument development and testing at the Kamioka Mine and analysis of the test data.
1b) Installation and observation of instruments on the seafloor and in seafloor boreholes, including efforts to improve related observation methods.
1c) Integrated data analysis and interpretation of observational data acquired with the DONET observation network and existing seafloor borehole observatories.

2) Research on fiber-optic sensing (including distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and other methods), which is being developed by JAMSTEC.
2a) Field observations within and outside of JAMSTEC, including cables off of Muroto, Toyohashi, and Hatsushima.
2b) Analysis of acquired fiber-optic sensing data related to earthquakes, tsunamis, and seafloor crustal deformation, including the development of analytical methods for the modeling of these phenomena.
2c) Development of efficient processing and analysis methods for multidimensional, high-density, large-volume fiber-optic sensing data.

3) Application of advanced optical technologies, such as optical lattice clocks, high-stability lasers, optical combs, and earth neutrino observations, to geophysical observations on the seafloor.

4) Development of a method for repeated high-precision seafloor observation integrated with underwater robotics, such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and implementation of observations and data analysis.

As many of these studies are conducted in the field at locations such as the Kamioka Mine, submarine cable landing stations, seafloor observatories in the Nankai Trough, and others, domestic and international field trips, including participation in shipboard cruises, may be required. In addition, because the research is conducted in cooperation with domestic and overseas research institutes and equipment development companies, the maintenance of effective communication with these entities will be necessary.
