Webinar Description
In this webinar, we will showcase the project Introducing Geophysics for Urban and Near-surface Applications (IGUaNA). This project includes a set of curricular modules that feature the applications of shallow geophysical techniques to societally-relevant, real-world problems that are designed to help attract a more diverse population of students to the geosciences. These modules support the development of students' quantitative and critical thinking skills by providing meaningful opportunities to apply those skills using authentic datasets related to (1) examining salt marsh pollution and restoration, (2) identifying historical burial grounds and urban infrastructure, and (3) urban renewal planning. Seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and electromagnetic induction geophysical datasets are explored in these modules. We will focus on summarizing the content of the modules, give examples of instructional materials, and illustrate how these materials may be integrated into introductory STEM courses. Participants will learn how materials have been tailored to appeal to a diverse student audience, how real data examples are used to achieve key learning objectives, and how these adaptable resources are accessible to non-geophysicist instructors.

Webinar goals
By the end of the webinar, participants will:

Understand how geophysical methods are applied to urban and environmental geoscience problems
Be familiar with introductory level geophysics course materials that can be targeted to inspire a diverse early-career undergraduate student population
Gain knowledge needed to utilize these course materials in their own teaching
