Dear colleagues,
We welcome you to apply to attend “Volatiles from Source to Surface”, a workshop which will occur in person from May 23-26th, 2022 at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. This workshop aims to provide a structured space for students and researchers across disciplines to share and synthesize their work related to magmatic volatiles from all GeoPRISMS sites and beyond. We aim to connect scientists from a variety of research disciplines, including petrology, geodynamic modeling, geochemistry, geodesy, magnetotellurics, seismology, and more. Specific topics of interest include volatiles and the crust, volatile impact on rheology, seismicity and conductivity, global volatile fluxes, and volatiles and volcanism (eruptive style). The workshop will comprise keynote and lightning talks, posters, and discussion sessions on May 24 and 26, with a field trip to Yellowstone on May 25. Preceding the workshop on May 23 will be a half-day early-career forum.
Key workshop goals are to:
* Showcase recent GeoPRISMS research that has advanced our understanding of volatile storage, movement, quantification, and cycling.
* Facilitate the formation of new, interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly for early-career scientists.
* Promote best practices for the archiving of data and educational materials.
Apply by January 5th, 2021 for full consideration, and to indicate your preferences/needs for an in-person workshop. Unfortunately, due to COVID uncertainty at this time, we are not able to accept international applications. However, we strongly encourage applications from students, post-docs, and early-career scientists. If interest exceeds capacity, career stage, research interest, inclusivity, and order of application submission may be used as criteria to select participants. We will notify participants of their acceptance and update the website with more information in early 2022.
Funding
Thanks to funding from the NSF GeoPRISMS program, there is no registration fee, breakfast and lunch is provided, and domestic travel and lodging support may be available but is prioritized for students, post-docs, early-career scientists, and underrepresented groups in the geosciences.
* COVID-19 Precautions
The safety of participants and our local community is paramount, and we will be requiring all participants to be vaccinated, or to provide a negative test result. We will move to a fully virtual format if necessary.
