Opportunity to Lead the Southern California Seismic Monitoring Project at the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena, CA



The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center (ESC) is hiring a Supervisory Geophysicist to lead our Southern California Seismic Monitoring Project. This important and influential permanent position is offered at the GS-14 level (salary range

$128,230 to $166,697). The mission of the ESC is to reduce seismic hazard by conducting basic and applied research on earthquakes.

This position serves as Project Leader of the Southern California Earthquake Monitoring Project, which operates the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN), Station Information System (SIS) and Earthquake Notification System (ENS). It also provides oversight for components of ShakeAlert support and the ANSS Quake Management System (AQMS). The SCSN is operated jointly by USGS and Caltech and operates an array of more than 350 seismic stations throughout southern California, the region with the highest earthquake risk in the United States and a population of more than 20 million. The SCSN is part of the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN), which is one of seven regions of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS). This position provides an opportunity for a leader interested in public service, and having a strong scientific and seismic network background, to guide the USGS’s earthquake monitoring efforts and lead advancements in the field.



Roles and Responsibilities:

* Ensures the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) meets its operational goals to monitor earthquake activity, collect data, and generate accurate products related to earthquakes in southern California.
* Coordinates and collaborates with other network managers, operators of related projects (e.g. ShakeAlert), and emergency response organizations for successful and consistent earthquake monitoring in California and the West.
* Collaborates with Caltech, the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) and other monitoring and products projects within the USGS.
* Participates on committees and offers recommendations to Earthquake Science Center and Earthquake Hazards Program leadership to ensure successful operation, growth and improvement of USGS seismic networks.
* Leads the development, improvement, and maintenance of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) Quake Management System (AQMS) Jiggle, Earthquake Notification System (ENS), and other software systems for earthquake monitoring and the generation of earthquake products.
* Provides administrative direction over project goals, activities, and functions, including managing budgets, personnel supervision, purchasing property, and permitting. Oversees a group of 15-20 scientists, engineers, technicians, IT professionals, computer scientists, and supervises 4-8 direct reports.
