Missions

The recruited post-doctoral researcher will work within the framework of the EU HORIZON-INFRA-2021-TECH-01 DT-GEO project, which aims at deploying a prototype digital twin (DT) for anthropogenic geophysical extreme forecasting (AGEF). The successful candidate will work at ITES (Strasbourg Institute of Earth & Environment) for two years in the seismology group of the ITI GeoT (Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute for the energy system transition) and in strong collaboration with the project partners (GFZ, IG PAS).

Activities

The recruited post-doctoral researcher will:
• Develop data-mining approaches through the EPOS EPISODES database for georeservoirs (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/)
• Implement quality control of induced earthquake catalogs using Machine Learning (ML) approaches
• Compute seismic source features of induced seismicity and its statistical properties including a- and b-values, temporal/magnitude clustering properties (p-values, dc-values), inter-event properties, and energy release properties.
• Develop ML algorithms to analyze and extract the features that govern:
o The long-range responses of georeservoirs
o The late responses of georeservoirs
o The maximum magnitudes of georeservoirs
• Collaborate closely in an interdisciplinary context with other researchers working on the DTC development of the DT-GEO project
• Present, publish (ISI peer-review) and communicate research results at scientific meetings and in scholarly journals.

Skills

The recruited post-doctoral researcher must have:
• PhD in seismology (at time of employment)
• Experience working in observational seismology
• Expertise in several of data science / machine learning / artificial intelligence / big data analysis / parametric time series analysis / statistics
• Programming skills (AI/ML programming frameworks, e.g. pytorch or tensorflow, Python, MATLAB, SQL)
• Experience in communicating, writing, publishing scientific works
• Proficiency in English level C2 (according to the European Framework for languages)

Work Context

The “DT-GEO” project aims to deploy a prototype “Digital Twins” (DT) on geophysical extremes consisting of interrelated Digital Twin Components (DTC) dealing with different types of geohazards including natural and anthropogenic induced earthquakes, volcanoes and earthquake-landslide triggered tsunamis. Here, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher contributing to the development of the DTC related to Anthropogenic Geophysical Extremes Forecasting with four workflow outcomes: forecasting of long-range responses of georeservoirs, forecasting of late responses of georeservoirs, modelling of the largest magnitude, and induced seismic hazard map estimation. The DTC-AGEF will be tested through demonstrators at two relevant European sites: Strasbourg geothermal site in France and KGHM copper ore mine in Poland. The recruited post-doctoral researcher will work on induced seismicity for two year at ITES (Strasbourg Institute of Earth & Environment) in Strasbourg (France), under the responsibility of Olivier Lengliné and Jean Schmittbuhl (members of the Seismology team at ITES). ITES (UMR7063) is a research unit under the supervision of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and the University of Strasbourg. The project is hosted in the framework of the Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute for the energy system transition (ITI GeoT), a program part or the excellence initiative at Strasbourg University which explores geoscience solutions to the energy transition, with a particular focus on deep groundwater: exploration, characterization and optimization of crustal reservoirs, risk management and of public perceptions.
