Announcing a Hands-On Data Resources Workshop for
*Marine/Solid Earth Geology-Geophysics-Geochemistry*
Monday 24th - Tuesday 25th October, 2022
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, New York
*Overview*
This in-person workshop is focused on providing hands-on experience for
accessing geoscience data through publically-available data resources.
Held at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, participants will be exposed
to a range of useful marine and solid earth geophysics-geochemistry
community data tools and resources. Hands-on demonstrations and
presentations will be given by data service/tool providers representing
these different groups and initiatives:
* Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS

*Format*
The hands-on activities of the workshop will be tailored to participant
interests. In advance of the workshop, participants will be asked to
complete a survey about their current data access needs and habits and
to provide a high-level summary of their science and/or education interests.
During the event, participants will work in teams to identify a science
question or geographical area of interest and will learn to find,
assess, and access existing data and resources that could help with
their investigations. Teams will be encouraged to develop simple how-to
documents for future use that may be shared with others having similar
research and education interests.
Data service/tool providers will be present throughout the workshop to
help guide participants and to answer questions as well as to receive
feedback themselves which could lead to changes in data systems and
tools to better meet community needs.
*Workshop Goals*
Participants will:
* Access a broad range of freely-available geoscience data tools and
resources to help support their research and teaching efforts, and
will learn how to discover and access data using these resources.
* Assess which data tools and resources are of greatest interest and
practice using them to address a scientific question.
* Extend their professional networks through connections with
geoscience data system providers and other participants.
* Provide feedback to data service/tool providers on better ways to
meet community needs.
*Participants*
Early-career geoscientists (graduate students, post-docs, early faculty)
are invited to apply to attend the workshop. Lamont-Doherty Earth
Observatory values diversity, equity, and inclusion. The varied
perspectives of a broad range of workshop attendees will produce better
outcomes for all. In addition, we encourage early-career geoscientists
of all identities, including dimensions such as culture, national
origin, ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, language, race,
religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status to apply to be
part of the workshop.
We aim to accept approximately 25 early-career geoscientists to
participate in the workshop. Participants will be selected based upon
likely beneficial impact from attending the event.
*Application deadline: 21st September 2022*. Successful applicants will
be notified soon thereafter.

*Logistics*
Up to $700 (seven hundred dollars) will be available to each participant
to help defray the cost of economy air travel and ground transportation
to the event.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided on both days, and there will be a
reception on the first evening.
Shared hotel accommodation will be provided at the Clinton Inn Hotel in
Tenafly, New Jersey, within walking distance of the downtown area.
Attendees needing/preferring single accommodation will have half the
overnight room rate covered by the workshop grant. A shuttle bus will
bring participants to and from the workshop on the Lamont campus.
All participants will be required to perform a rapid antigen COVID test
prior to the start of the workshop. Test kits will be provided upon
check-in at the hotel. Masks will also be provided and participants will
be required to wear masks during the workshop sessions at Lamont and to
comply with the prevailing COVID-19 policy
