Common Sensor Platform

The GAGE and SAGE facilities were recently awarded supplemental funding
from the NSF for an innovative, large-scale collaborative effort to
standardize engineering practices and our various instrument station
designs. The Common Sensor Platform, or CSP, will consist of a core station
design consisting of scalable, modular components that will be applied to
multiple geophysical sensor types and will accommodate a variety of
physical environments, field logistics and use cases. The effort is led by
a core team of twelve senior engineers across all facilities, though it
relies on the expertise and participation of all engineering staff. The
project’s intended completion is slated for spring of 2024.

Currently, the group’s main activities are reviewing and documenting all
existing station designs through a series of virtual technical
presentations that are open to all engineering staff. This initial effort
will help the group identify key commonalities and differences across
existing station designs, and it also allows staff from all organizations
to participate in a wide-ranging technical exchange with the goal of
sharing current engineering practices and knowledge. The CSP team will then
use this accumulated knowledge to identify scalable and modular elements
for the future CSP station design, which will be released in 2024.
Concurrently, the team will flesh out best engineering practices.
Ultimately, the CSP is intended to be an evolving, living design that will
continue to adapt to scientific community needs and seek out and adopt new
design standardization and efficiencies as new technologies become
available.

Most importantly, the CSP is intended to establish a collegial, creative,
and unified engineering practice that optimizes geophysical scientific
observations and objectives, and that fosters common practices across all
instrumentation and infrastructure groups within the future EarthScope
Consortium.

*Celebrate IRIS and UNAVCO*

UNAVCO
With the upcoming merger of UNAVCO and IRIS into EarthScope Consortium, we
acknowledge the almost four decades of community support each organization
has provided to the earth science community. You can join us in Boulder on
Thursday, October 27, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. for an open house to recognize
community, staff, and sponsors dedication to supporting geodesy since
1984: Celebrating
UNAVCO: Three decades of support for community science
https://www.unavco.org/event/celebrating-unavco-three-decades-of-support-for-community-science/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter_jf&utm_campaign=oct.
Pre-registration is appreciated.

IRIS
Please join us on Wednesday evening, November 2, 2022 for a celebration of
the past 38 years of IRIS. With this casual reception we will celebrate
those who have served, supported, participated in, and collaborated with
IRIS for these many years. We will also celebrate the merger of IRIS and
UNAVCO to form the EarthScope Consortium as we look ahead to many years of
future success. There will be time for sharing remarks, stories, and
reminiscences. All staff and friends of IRIS are invited.

The reception will be held on the second floor of the AAAS building in
downtown Washington, DC (1200 New York Ave, NW) and will start at 6:00 PM.
Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Rhonda (rporter<at>iris.edu) so we
can get an accurate headcount.

For those staff not based in the Washington, DC area—we will try to have a
very simple virtual capability implemented for this reception. We'll keep
you posted.

*AGU Fall Meeting*

Headed to Chicago for the Fall Meeting of the AGU? Come visit us as
EarthScope Consortium in the exhibit hall at booth #1413. Check out our new
look!

Join us for the EarthScope Consortium Reception, Monday, December 12, 6:30
- 8:00 at the AGU Fall Meeting, exact location TBD. Meet the Directors of
the EarthScope Board-elect and put your name in the raffle to win some new
EarthScope merchandise.

*New Social Media*

IRIS and UNAVCO social media accounts will soon be undergoing transitions
to set up EarthScope’s social media presence. These changes will start in
November in order to ensure everything is running smoothly by AGU—keep an
eye out on the platforms you use for information about how our accounts
will combine or be rebranded.
