Twenty years ago Sunday a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred south of Seattle. One person died and approximately 400 people were injured. There was damage from Seattle to Olympia with widespread landslides and liquefaction. This Thursday we will release a Teachable Moment presentation for Sunday's 20th anniversary of the 2001 Nisqually earthquake that impacted Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, and surrounding communities in collaboration with ShakeAlert! A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has occurred in Japan. At least 50 people were reported injured. A powerpoint and animations have been prepared with additional details about this earthquake. Fifty years ago today a magnitude 6.6 occurred in the early morning in San Fernando, California. 64 people lost their lives and more than 2,500 were injured. The earthquake caused significant damage, and prompted action and legislation to protect people and reduce earthquake loss across the state. California is safer today because of this earthquake.
