Aftershocks

The DMC is now calculating aftershock sequence figures and animations for all M7.0+ earthquakes. The movie, aftershock and background seismicity figures are updated hourly for the first day and twice daily for the first 10 days. GCMT focal mechanisms are plotted when available. The catalog has been backfilled with events to 1980.

Aftershock Kuril Screen
Ten days of aftershocks for the 2006/11/15 M8.3 Kurile Islands megathrust earthquake are animated with GCMT focal mechanisms, if available. The likely fault for this event as well as that of the 2005 M8.1 outer rise normal fault event (parallel to the trench and to the SE) are both disticntly illuminated with aftershock activity.
