Cruise in June of 2001 approx. 200 nautical miles south of Bermuda, on the edge of the Sargasso Sea. Tested new applications of old technology (using airguns to image the mantle) & old apps w/new tech (using the new Scripps L-CHEAPO 2000 OBSs in a refraction exp). Our results should pave the way for future active-source seismic exp. focused on directly imaging upper-mantle lithospheric properties. Scientific goals of this exp. involve inferring oceanic mantle dynamic processes from the seismic structure of the upper mantle. At a mid-ocean ridge, upwelling mantle undergoes two processes that should fundamentally alter its seismic structure: melting and corner flow.
