Hi,
The following gives nothing in my browser (no error, no change of page...):
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station
If I remove the loc=--, it works fine:
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station
Doc says:
loc[ation] 00 Select one or more SEED location identifier. Use
-- for “Blank” location IDs (ID’s containing 2 spaces). Accepts
wildcards and lists. Accepts exclusions.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Anthony Lomax

Hi Anthony,
The 204 means "no matching data selected". If you would like to see the error returned in your web browser try adding the parameter-value "nodata=404":
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station&nodata=404
If you submit the query with channel level details:
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=channel&nodata=404
you'll see that there are no channels with empty location IDs.

Hi Chad,
Thanks for the information. I am reading an mseed file downloaded from
IRIS Wilbur in 2011 or earlier, and it appears in my software that the
location code is empty:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35233023/Flores_Indonesia_1992.mseed
???
Thanks!
Anthony
PS - I have added a work around to this in my code, so you do not need
to reply again on the weekend!

Hi Anthony,
The location code in that data is definitely empty. I did a quick check and it is exactly the same waveform as the II.AAK data the DMC is serving with location ID '00'.
I have no idea what happened to that data such that the location ID is not present in the copy you have. The data in the archive was written pre-2011 and not modified since and such a change is not something the DMC would do during delivery. Any chance your copy has been modified in the last 4 years?

Hi Anthony-
I checked the wayback machine to find a time when II would have transitioned their data from using an empty location code. I found an announcement from Rick back in Dec 2001 regarding IRIS/IDA resending their data to correct for mistakes in the MK7 datalogger. At that point, they were supposed to re-send data going back to 1993 containing numeric location codes. Since you are looking at 1992 data, I am not sure when that got shifted in our archives, so what you received may indeed be pretty old. Perhaps Rick can remember what the II resend history looked like.
Data is a constantly shifting medium here. Probably good for you to get a fresh copy of this event from WILBER III.

Hi Rob,
Regarding the II data repair, that effected data recorded in 1993 and later, so that action could not be the issue here.

Thanks for the information. I am reading an mseed file downloaded from IRIS Wilbur in 2011 or earlier, and it appears in my software that the location code is empty:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35233023/Flores_Indonesia_1992.mseed
???
Thanks!
Anthony
PS - I have added a work around to this in my code, so you do not need to reply again on the weekend!

The 204 means "no matching data selected". If you would like to see the error returned in your web browser try adding the parameter-value "nodata=404":
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station&nodata=404
If you submit the query with channel level details:
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=channel&nodata=404
you'll see that there are no channels with empty location IDs.

Hi Chad and Rob,
Thanks for taking a look and for the information. I am pretty sure I have been using this (and other Wilbur mseed files with empty loc code) for a few years without problems when requesting meta data from the ws's - it seems to me that the problem started recently (since ~~6 months???), but I am not sure. Perhaps something to do with the changes to the loc code to represent empty?
In any case, I have done and can do some work-around. I have a very large number of mseed files in an event database, so I would only download again from Wilbur as a last resort.
Any chance your copy has been modified in the last 4 years?
No, it has the original date and I never write mseed.
I am leaving for IUGG tomorrow, so may be respond rapidly to any more discussion on this.
Thanks,
Ciao,
Anthony

Hi Chad,
Well, it seems that I got an mseed from Wilbur in Dec 2011 that has
empty loc code for stations that should have 00 or other loc code. And I
do not recall this causing a problem before this week in requesting
meta-data from the IRIS-WS. I did recently switch to the FDSN WS, maybe
there is a difference in the way it handles empty loc codes?
I put a few of the mseed files from 2011 here:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/t40qzkwzcsps5c6/AAAy1TDKp5q4TfCWe9GpNmKBa?dl=0
in case they may be of use to you.
It is late here...
See you over coffee...
Thanks,
Anthony

found an announcement from Rick back in Dec 2001 regarding
IRIS/IDA resending their data to correct for mistakes in the MK7
datalogger. At that point, they were supposed to re-send data
going back to 1993 containing numeric location codes. Since you
are looking at 1992 data, I am not sure when that got shifted in
our archives, so what you received may indeed be pretty old.
Perhaps Rick can remember what the II resend history looked like.
Data is a constantly shifting medium here. Probably good for you
to get a fresh copy of this event from WILBER III.

Hi Anthony,
The location code in that data is definitely empty. I did a
quick check and it is exactly the same waveform as the II.AAK
data the DMC is serving with location ID '00'.
I have no idea what happened to that data such that the
location ID is not present in the copy you have. The data in
the archive was written pre-2011 and not modified since and
such a change is not something the DMC would do during
delivery. Any chance your copy has been modified in the last
4 years?

Hi Chad,
Thanks for the information. I am reading an mseed file
downloaded from IRIS Wilbur in 2011 or earlier, and it
appears in my software that the location code is empty:

???
Thanks!
Anthony
PS - I have added a work around to this in my code, so
you do not need to reply again on the weekend!

Hi Anthony,
The 204 means "no matching data selected". If you
would like to see the error returned in your web
browser try adding the parameter-value "nodata=404":
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station&nodata=404
If you submit the query with channel level details:
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=channel&nodata=404
you'll see that there are no channels with empty
location IDs.

In fact, what is returned is:
Query:http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=TLY&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=chan
HTTP/1.1 204 No Content
???

Hi,
The following gives nothing in my browser (no
error, no change of page...):
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&loc=--&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station
If I remove the loc=--, it works fine:
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/query?net=II&sta=AAK&cha=BHZ&starttime=1992-12-12&endtime=1992-12-12&level=station
Doc says:
loc[ation] 00 Select one or more SEED
location identifier. Use -- for “Blank”
location IDs (ID’s containing 2 spaces).
Accepts wildcards and lists. Accepts exclusions.
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
