Research Scientist / Software Engineer - University of Washington
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) at the University of Washington in Seattle has immediate openings for two Research Scientists to join our team implementing earthquake early warning in Cascadia.
Description:
The research focus of these positions is the development of real-time systems for detecting and characterizing large earthquake ruptures in progress based on seismic and GPS observations, for the purpose of delivering early warnings of imminent strong ground shaking. The successful candidates will have advanced programming skills, excellent understanding of real-time seismic and/or GPS data acquisition systems, and strong knowledge of computational and theoretical seismology and/or geodesy. The successful applicants will demonstrate familiarity and facility with seismic databases. We are looking for an enthusiastic person to participate in this ongoing project. This position includes opportunities for fieldwork across Cascadia as part of the larger organization.
Requirements:
Ph.D. in Seismology or a closely related geophysical field plus two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience.
Excellent knowledge of general seismic network operations including operations and uses of data from strong-motion and broadband seismic sensors and data loggers; knowledge of computer programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Java, and Perl in Unix-like environments; familiarity with seismological databases; excellent professional and personal communications skills.
Valuable supplementary skills and knowledge include: Advanced skills in object-oriented programming. Experience with Oracle database systems. Understanding of the seismotectonics of subduction zones, especially Cascadia. Knowledge of seismic data acquisition systems. General knowledge of Pacific Northwest seismicity and tectonic geology.
To Apply:
Candidates seeking an exciting new opportunity are encouraged to visit www.uw.edu/jobs and search for Req # 91118.
Review of applicants will begin February 1, 2013 and continue until the position is filled.
