NIOSH is seeking to hire a seismologist/geophysicist in Spokane, WA for mine safety research projects utilizing seismic monitoring at active underground mines. The permanent full-time Research Physical Scientist position, Series/Grade GS-1301-13, has a salary range of $81,823 to $106,369.
As part of its mine safety research mission, NIOSH investigates mining-induced seismicity and deep-mine stability. Research staff installs, operates, and maintains seismic monitoring networks in western US underground mines prone to damaging rock bursts.
As a Research Physical Scientist within NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), some of your specific duties will include:
- Engage in research to increase understanding of causes of mining-related seismic events in order to develop and evaluate methods to mitigate risk from this deep-mine hazard
- Responsibility for the integrity of seismological processing of network data, including source characterization of large and small events, and seismic velocity model development
- Develop seismic hazard analyses
- Estimate and project near-field ground motions
- Timely analysis of significant seismic response to mining activities
- Participate in periodic geophysics field experiments
- Present research at meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals
- Work as part of a team and interact with other NIOSH scientists, engineers, and industry professionals to design and implement research projects in support of major agency scientific/engineering programs
