The Ocean-Bottom Seismology Laboratory of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University is presently seeking a Marine Development Technician to assist in the maintenance and operation of its fleet of 60 broadband ocean-bottom seismometers. This position will provide broad practical experience of scientific instrumentation and ocean engineering and will also provide opportunities for individual design and development projects. The position will suit a recent engineering graduate or an experienced technician.
Duties and responsibilities include: Participate in scientific research cruises; prepare and ship seafloor scientific instruments and equipment; deploy and recover instruments at sea; and evaluate instrument condition. Prepare instruments for deployment: assemble, refurbish, clean and maintain ocean-bottom seismometers and pressure gauges. Perform electrical and mechanical certification tests on ocean-bottom seismometers. Maintain laboratory tools and other equipment. Maintain instrument, equipment and component database. Participate with lab engineers in assembly and development projects, including the use of computer-aided design software.
