A postdoctoral position in seismology is available at LGLTPE (ENS de Lyon, Univ Lyon 1, CNRS, France), beginning in fall 2016. The position is a full-time 2-years appointment. The successful applicant will work on methodological aspects of earthquake localization.

Brief description of the project
There are many methods and algorithms available to locate low magnitude crustal earthquakes. Different approaches produce different results that vary depending on both observational parameters (e.g. number and distribution of stations, nature of inverted data) and inversion parameters (e.g. velocity model, weight given to different observations, initial location). The goal of this project is to quantify the levels of uncertainties associated with different localization procedures in different seismicity catalogues. A better understanding of uncertainties in earthquake localizations is crucial for seismic hazard studies.
This work will involve the use of both synthetic datasets and field data from the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées (OMP). The quality of the OMP localizations is currently estimated empirically (with a letter from A to E). A potential direction of research will be to compare these estimates with more quantitative uncertainties, obtained by Bayesian inversion.
This project will be done in collaboration with Matthieu Sylvander (OMP, Toulouse), Pierre Arroucau (DIAS, Dublin), and Kevin Manchuel (EDF).
