Background: The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) monitors earthquake and volcanic activity across the Pacific Northwest. The PNSN is cooperatively operated by the University of Washington and The University of Oregon and sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Department of Energy, the State of Washington, and the State of Oregon. Beginning in 1969 with five seismometers, the PNSN has grown to operate seismographs stations at more than 300 sites in Washington and Oregon, ranging from indoor urban locations to remote sites on the flanks of Cascade volcanoes. The PNSN is an organization dedicated to reducing impacts of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the states of Washington and Oregon by providing accurate and fast information about earthquakes and ground motions to scientists, engineers, planners, and the public. The staff of the PNSN consists of seismologists, data analysts, field technicians and computer support personnel.

The PNSN, in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, has an outstanding opportunity for a PNSN Field Engineer/Research Scientist Engineer to troubleshoot, repair, construct, install, test and maintain seismic instruments, data telemetry infrastructure, and networking systems. This position oversees, under supervision of PNSN management, the design, maintenance and upgrading of digital seismographs and related telemetry. We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision as well as a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with the USGS and scientific colleagues throughout the US to define and employ best practices, and to communicate PNSN innovations. Work sites will range from our electronics shop at the University to off campus locations in Washington and Oregon both indoors and outdoors. Although most work will be in the Puget Sound region, some overnight travel may be necessary.


Under supervision of Research Engineer or Scientist, and Seismologist:
•Calibration, testing, repair and deployment of seismic monitoring equipment, amplifiers, discriminators and associated communications/telemetry equipment.
•Works with UW and PNSN IT staff as well as IT staff at remote sites to configure robust networks to relay seismic data from remote sites to PNSN. TCP/IP network configuration, security, management and troubleshooting. Working knowledge of routing and firewall configuration, vpn, ssl/tls, linux, routerOS desirable.
•Builds and repairs masts, interconnecting cables, mounting hardware for antennas, solar panels, and instrumentation enclosures.
•Builds and repairs electronic interface devices such as summing amps, power regulators, noise filters from design documents.
•Maintains accurate records of remote field site maintenance visits, instrument condition and inventory via written and computer entry system.
•Repairs and calibrates or send for factory repair specialized lab test equipment.

•Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering field, and minimum of two years’ experience as an electronic technician OR the equivalent education/experience.
•Experience with both analog and digital radio. Should be experienced at maintaining VHF FM radios, operating digital spread-spectrum data telemetry systems, and CDMA telemetry.
•Familiarity with TCP/IP networking and firewall architecture, maintenance and troubleshooting.
•Excellent communication skills.
•Proven ability to work well both autonomously and in team-oriented group.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

•Knowledge of and experience with computerized databases.
•Experience using computers with Unix/Solaris and Linux operating systems.
•Experience with seismic or related data acquisition systems.
•Metal Fabrication

Conditions of Employment:

Must be able to operate a state vehicle on a daily basis, which requires a valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington.
