We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team in multiple activities supporting the Nuclear Non-Proliferation missions. Specific research areas include:

• Aerosol Sciences and Thermal Fluid Systems R&D
• Filtration systems design and testing
• Particle dynamics simulations
• Sensor concept design, development and testing
• Related modeling and analysis efforts.

The selected applicant will integrate into an established team to perform research and development focused on customer mission requirements through phenomenological understanding to system/model concept development, design, and analysis. Areas of research focus include development of novel experimental setups, modeling via code development or simulation packages, and research in aerosol sciences detection and measurement systems.

You will work on diverse problem sets requiring collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Opportunities exist to perform data collects and analysis to prove informed empirical hypotheses, as well as in support of model development and validation. Future work will be motivated by your vision, which will include the publication and presentation of significant research findings along with new systems concept designs.
Some travel is required for this role.

Required:

• Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Material Science/Engineering, or a related technical field
• Lab experience that includes experiment design, testing, monitoring, troubleshooting, and data analysis
• Proficiency in modeling and simulation, data analysis, and coding languages
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance
Desired:
• Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Material Science/Engineering, or a related technical field
• Experience designing, building and working with aerosol science experiments to include advanced filtration systems and fluid/aerosol instrumentation (e.g. flow meters, pressure gauges, instruments for data acquisition)
• Proficiency with computational fluid dynamics, fluid mechanics, particle dynamics and/or code development
• Exposure to complex coupled physics processes
• Experience with: combustive thermochemistry; atmospheric and environmental particulate sciences; particle-laden flows; particulate formation and fate phenomenology; and/or radionuclide safety and control measures
• Experience with running code on high performance computing systems
• Application of statistical analysis methods
• Proven ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) to include presentations and crafting detailed scientific and engineering documentation
• Experience collaborating on teams to successfully execute complex projects in a variety of roles (leader and group member)
• Willingness to and experience in mentoring student interns
• Active L or Q security clearance
