The IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech is seeking applicants to fill the position of Staff Scientist / Polar Field Engineer. The primary responsibility of this position is to support Polar geophysical research from the lab, office, and field. Duties include: developing specialized equipment for cold, dark environments; testing, preparing, and shipping equipment; serving as a technical liaison for PI experiments; supporting the installation, maintenance, and decommission of stations in the Arctic and Antarctic; producing and maintaining documentation related to Polar support and systems; and training members of PASSCAL’s user community.

Associate’s degree or completion of program of 18+ months after high school - Area of study: Electronics, technology, or related sciences plus 3 years of directly related experience. Bachelor’s degree - Area of study: Geophysics or related science, or engineering (Mechanical, Structural, Electrical or similar core engineering) required. Seismological or other science field experience desired. Electrical, mechanical or structural engineering design experience desired. Data telemetry and network design & support experience desired. Data analysis experience desired. Scripting and programming experience desired. Portable DC power systems and power budget calculations desired. Data acquisition systems for rugged field environments desired. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills desired.
