The Southern California Seismic Network is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to research incorporating Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) into Earthquake Early Warning (EEW). DAS provides an opportunity to add pre-existing telecommunications fibers to areas of the Network with low station density (e.g., offshore California). We seek proof of concept by using onshore fiber to answer some key questions regarding feasibility, scalability, adaption of conventional EEW algorithms for DAS, and potential impacts to current EEW systems.
We seek applicants with strong programming skills that are interested in the challenges that accompany a real-time problem. Candidates with prior experience in this topic are particularly encouraged to apply, but exceptional candidates without such experience will be considered as well. A Ph.D. is required upon appointment.
Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a one-page cover letter, and the contact information of three references to Allen Husker (ahusker<at>caltech.edu). Questions regarding the position and application procedure should be directed to the same email address.
Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
Caltech is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
