Earth and Space Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Web Application Developer to support our real-time seismic monitoring projects.
Housed in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences, the PNSN monitors earthquakes in the states of Washington and Oregon for public safety and scientific research. We operate approximately 500 remote seismic stations throughout the region. Data from these remote sites are transmitted, continuously in real time, to our processing and alerting center at the UW Seattle campus. The data are processed through several applications to provide a series of products, including real-time warnings of imminent shaking (called ShakeAlertTM Earthquake Early Warning), earthquake locations and sizes, distribution of strong shaking, and raw data archived for scientific and engineering studies. As a Web Application Developer with the PNSN, you will work within a small team of scientists, software engineers, and computer specialists at the PNSN to build both public facing and internal websites and applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• 30%: Build web applications optimized for scalability and speed. Write clean, well-documented and well-tested code. Ensure cross-browser compatibility and accessibility.
• 30%: Implement and maintain application front ends.
• 25%: Work with the software team to maintain existing services. Communicate effectively with non-technical users and team members.
• 5%: Act as a mentor for undergraduate student developers through design, documentation, and code reviews.
• 10%: Participate in duty rotations. Earthquakes don’t maintain business hours
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
• At least three years of professional experience developing and deploying applications in a distributed and high availability environment
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:
• Expertise in web technologies such as HTML5, CSS, Javascript and JQuery
• Experience with content management frameworks such as Drupal or Joomla
• Experience with working on a software team and using collaborative tools
• Experience with at least one frontend framework such as Angular, React, or Vue
• Experience with RDBMS such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
• Experience with at least one backend framework such as Rails or Django
• Experience with AWS
• Proficient in a scripting language such as Python or Ruby.
• Comfortable with Linux environment.
