Position: Data Specialist (Research Technologist 2)

Do you have quantitative skills and experience working with large quantities of geophysical data? The Seismoacoustics Team in LANL’s Geophysics Group (EES-17) of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division has an immediate opening for a creative and innovative Data Specialist. Join our team in an effort to collect, organize, and manage a diverse set of geophysical research data. EES-17 conducts geophysical research for global and national security including multiple aspects of explosion monitoring for nuclear non-proliferation, broader non-proliferation work, and a wide variety of other scientific and civil applications. This research involves the collection and maintenance of large volumes of geophysical data through multi-institutional collaboration. These data are used for physical and numerical analyses, modeling, machine learning, and data analytics.

What You Will Do
As a Research Technologist in the Geophysics Group, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on topics that may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Collect, organize, and manipulate geophysical data sets for processing, including data storage, access, and quality control.
- Discover, retrieve, and reformat international datasets from a variety of public sources and collaborative partnerships.
- Develop and maintain metadata management processes/practices to facilitate data curation.
- Collaborate with team members to plan and develop data storage systems and software to support data collection, management and access.
- Work together with the team members to help maintain and improve access to geophysical data in support of a variety of research programs related to non-proliferation, national security and energy security.
- Interact with sponsors, customers, partners, and data providers including universities, U.S. government agencies, national laboratories, foreign data providers,
consortia, and international organizations (e.g. CTBTO).
- Contribute to a scientific team and interact with seismologists and other researchers to design and implement research projects, while coordinating program requirements and deliverables for sponsors.

What You Need
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in geophysics or related science field (e.g. physics, acoustics, geophysics, seismology, mathematics, data science, or computer science) and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of seismic and infrasound data and familiarity with other geophysical data including electromagnetic, hydroacoustic, geodetic, and imagery.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, C/C++, Matlab, Perl, and shell scripting, and experience with computing environments (Mac/PC/LINUX).
- Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication of technical information.
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Qualifications
