Are you looking for opportunities to be part of an exceptional multidisciplinary team tackling some of the hardest problems facing our society, nationally and globally? The Seismoacoustics Team of the Geophysics Group (EES-17) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate position. Salary ranges between $80k-$93k. Our group spans geophysical applications in seismology, infrasound, geomechanical modeling, data analytics, and non-destructive material evaluation. We are seeking candidates for with an interest and technical backgrounds in regional body wave tomography and surface wave modeling. In particular, the Seismoacoustics Team primarily researches global explosion monitoring for national security purposes. The successful candidate will collaborate to build improved propagation models for local and regional phases, along with robust surface wave modeling with applications to national security . Research topics for this position are flexible, but will likely include:

* Variable grid crustal models addressing unique regional body wave phases
* Shear propagation modeling leveraging surface waves
* Attenuation and anisotropic components of tomography
* Joint inversion (body and surface waves, amplitudes, gravity, receiver functions)
The LANL Seismoacoustics Team is dedicated to being a leader in the field of explosion monitoring, and actively explores the use of multiple computational techniques, machine learning, high performance computing, data analytics, multi-physics datasets, and physics-based modeling of the explosion sources to address problems relevant to the national interest.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements

* Research experience in seismic modeling and inversion
* Proficiency in programming using C/C++, Fortran, and/or Python
* Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
* Communication skills as evidence by publications and oral presentations at conferences
* Experience working in interdisciplinary teams
* Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship
Education: A Ph.D. degree in a STEM field related to seismology, geophysics, applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or other related fields. For a postdoctoral appointment the candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience with big-data processing and analyses methods
* Experience with development or support of research projects and proposals.
* Ability to bring creative solutions to complex problems
* Ability to plan and organize assignments to meet project deliverables
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

COVID Vaccine

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.

Note To Applicants

The cover letter should include a short biography (2–3 lines), research interests, and future career goals. Research interests should be aligned with the Team’s research scope. Please contact Team Leader Michael Cleveland ( mcleveland<at>lanl.gov ) with questions about the Team. For general information about being a LANL postdoc, visit the Postdoc Program website.

Where You Will Work

The mission of the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is to solve complex problems of importance in environment, energy, and national security by using our capabilities in earth and environmental sciences. The division is a highly interactive, well-funded research organization with an annual budget of approximately $100 million and a staff of approximately 240.The core disciplines of EES Division include Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geodynamics, Geography, Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Computational Science and Geotechnical Engineering. The disciplines are organized into groups within the division, which consist of 30-40 Scientists, with approximately 20 support staff, post-docs, and students. Each group has a variety of scientific programs, on the order of $20-$25M in direct funding. The members of each group are organized into 3 or 4 teams, led by team leaders who support the Group Leader directly.
