Thread: intermittent error with station

Hi Philip,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We are starting to see more widespread reports of this error cropping up across different clients and it does appear to be revolving around calls to the station web service.

As you’ve indicated, it does seem to be intermittent and not repeatable. It does seem similar to a bug we encountered towards the end of 2022, so we’ll be reviewing those conditions and see what is comparable between these bugs.

We will be turning our focus onto this issue more next week and can provide more information as we know more information.

Same thing using obspy gives:
UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0x8b in position 1: invalid start byte

However, it also seems to work just fine sometimes, so my suspicions, as usual, go to the load balancer.

Have also seen similar issue with
http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/station/1/application.wadl
which should just be a plain file download, so seems like it should never fail.
