Dear colleagues

Please make your PhD students and postdocs aware of this position.

The seismology group at GFZ Potsdam (German Research Center for
Geosciences) in Potsdam in the Berlin area (Germany) is seeking a
postdoctoral research associate in the EU-funded multi-disciplinary
SUBMERSE project, which will leverage existing submarine telecom
infrastructures to record Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and State
of Polarization (SOP) data for geohazard evaluation and monitoring.

You will be responsible for the geoscientific use case: submarine
earthquake detection, location and magnitude determination at the
project focus sites in the Aegean Sea, off Svalbard, offshore Portugal
and Madeira. This task can involve developing new methodologies and/or
processing workflows to use DAS and SOP to obtain information on
seafloor structure and processes based on AI applications and developing
open source software.

Your qualifications:
* Master’s degree or equivalent and a PhD in Geophysics, Physics,
Computer Science or related disciplines
* Good scientific programming skills (preferably Python), familiarity
with git (or other software versioning system)
* Familiarity with fundamentals of seismology and experience with
geophysical data processing
* Prior experience with DAS or SOP data, and/or experience with marine
data is desirable
* Experience in data science, artificial intelligence and/or big data
analysis
* Knowledge of AI/ML programming frameworks, e.g. PyTorch, and/or
seismological frameworks (e.g., SeisBench, Obspy, Pyrocko) is desirable
* Willingness to interact with different fields in a multidisciplinary
research environment

This is a fixed term position until April 2026. The preferred start date
is July but flexibility is possible.
