Dear colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to our session of this year’s AGU Fall meeting, 11-15 December 2023, San Francisco & online:

Session T003: Control of fault zone heterogeneity and fault roughness on multiscale deformation at inter- and intra-plate fault zones
Session description: The geometrical, lithological, and rheological heterogeneities along and surrounding fault zones are often related, with their interplay governing fault slip behavior and crustal deformation at wide-ranging spatiotemporal scales. Geophysical observations, in situ measurements via drilling, and studies of exhumed geologic records have revealed complex patterns of stress, deformation, consolidation, fluid flow, and variations in the composition and metamorphism of fault-zone and wall rocks at different length scales. Many studies suggest that these heterogenous fault-zone properties control the modes of slip, earthquake rupture characteristics, distribution of seismicity, off-fault damage, and longer-term margin evolution beyond the earthquake cycle. A better understanding of fault-zone heterogeneity, fault roughness and their influences requires integrated analysis of observations from seismology, geodesy, geology, geophysical imaging, and laboratory geomechanical and geochemical experiments. In this session, we welcome multi-disciplinary contributions from these various perspectives, as well as modeling studies that integrate the observations.
