Postdoctoral Fellow Positions Available
UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory

Development and implementation of earthquake early warning

Two postdoctoral fellow positions are available at the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory to join Prof. Richard Allen’s earthquake early warning group.

Earthquake early warning is the rapid detection of earthquakes underway, estimation of the ground shaking hazard they pose, and warning of people in harm’s way. The successful applicants will work on one or more projects related to early warning. The specific areas of research are flexible and will depend on the skills and interests of the successful applicants. Topics of interest include studies of large magnitude earthquake processes, the physics of earthquake rupture, development of seismic- and geodetic-based methods for rapid earthquake characterization, development of methods for improved ground shaking estimation, use of new types of geophysical networks including the use of mems-type sensors and cell phones, development of delivery tools to provide warnings, and engagement of warning users. More information about current research efforts and interests is available on the group website: http://seismo.berkeley.edu/~rallen/.

The position is available to start immediately, or when the successful applicants are available. The initial appointment would be for one year. Reappointment for a second and possibly third year is typical but dependent on satisfactory progress.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received and continue until the positions are filled. Applicants should send a letter detailing their research interests and its relevance to earthquake early warning, and a CV to Prof. Richard Allen (rallen<at>berkeley.edu). Questions about the position should be sent to the same email address.
