On the Cutting Edge Review Camp at AGU
Dear Cutting Edge Alumni,
We are in the process of reviewing the full collection of teaching activities developed through the On the Cutting Edge program for geoscience faculty professional development. This is an open invitation to Cutting Edge alumni/NAGT members to contribute to this review. We plan to assemble a "review camp" on Sunday, December 14, prior to the annual AGU Fall Meeting. We can offer a $600 stipend to offset travel to the meeting and to cover an extra day of lodging and meals for your participation. Here are the details:
Participants are expected to review at least 5 teaching activities prior to the "review camp." On average, the reviews should take about half an hour each (although this may be a bit more or less depending on the scope of the activities).
Please indicate on your application disciplines you are most interested in reviewing. We will try to match these interests as best we can, but we all teach “out of field” much of the time (and we will prioritize areas of greatest need).
Details of the On the Cutting Edge review process can be found at: http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/review.html. The reviews make use of a rubric grounded in research on learning and reflecting research based teaching practices
We will post a tutorial on how to access and use the Review System for those who are unfamiliar with the review process and tool. This is a very efficient way to get initiated into the review process
The review camp will be on Sunday, Dec. 14, the day before the formal start of the AGU Fall Meeting. We will initially meet as a group to answer questions and reconcile any difficulties you encountered in reviewing a subset of your assigned activities PRIOR TO attending Review Camp. For the rest of the day we will continue to review additional resources (~20 per reviewer). Plan to meet 8:00am-5:00pm at CCSF Chinatown campus. We will provide lunch and morning and afternoon snacks. Bring a laptop computer to continue the review process.
Interested in participating? You can apply via this online form:
http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/review_camp2014.html
Let us know the subject area(s) you would feel most comfortable reviewing. We can accept 25 participants, so if available, sign up now! NAGT members will have priority. Deadline: October 7 to apply. We’ll send out notifications ASAP afterward.
The geoscience community has long called for a peer-reviewed teaching activity collection, and we have almost realized this vision. If you have ever attended a Cutting Edge workshop, or have used the associated teaching resources, this is your chance to give back to the community. Questions? Contact Dave Mogk, mogkATmontana.edu. Thanks in advance for your interest and support.
Rock on!
Dave Mogk
