Dear colleagues,
It is our pleasure to invite you to contribute to the Special Section on Caribbean Tectonics, Seismicity and Earthquake Hazards, to be published in the Seismological Research Letters. The deadline for manuscript submission is June 1st, 2022. The intention is to have the Special Section out by the 2023 annual SSA meeting, to be held in Puerto Rico.
In this email, you can find the description of the Special Section and the list of Guest Editors. Please feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions, or if you have a manuscript in process.
Sincerely,
Xyoli, Eric, Silvia, Roby, Elizabeth, O’Leary, and Richard
Recent tectonic activity in the Caribbean region, including significant earthquakes in Haiti and Puerto Rico and activity at La Soufriere Volcano, highlight the dynamic tectonic setting and associated natural hazards of the Caribbean region. Defined in its broadest sense, the Caribbean region encompasses areas within and surrounding the Caribbean plate, including the Greater and Lesser Antilles, northern South America, and Central America. The Caribbean plate and its margins provide a natural laboratory that encapsulates diverse tectonic and geologic settings and processes, and their interactions, in a relatively small area. The region has a history of large earthquakes and volcanic activity, with associated ground failure and tsunamis, that has resulted in substantial loss of life. With growing population and infrastructure in the Caribbean, these natural hazards will have increasing regional and global impact.
Possible topics for manuscripts include, but are not limited to: studies of regional and local seismicity; paleoseismic studies of active faults; analyses of crustal deformation; characterization of ground motions and site effects as applied to important infrastructure; engineering seismic studies of major facilities; geodynamic and kinematic modeling, interpretations of volcano seismicity, and presentation of new results facilitated by improved observational networks. We also encourage manuscripts focusing on disaster reconnaissance and societal impacts of earthquakes or other hazards, as well as papers on science communication, participatory/citizen science, and risk mitigation.
Guest Editors for this special section:

Richard Robertson, The UWI Seismic Research Centre; West Indies; Richard.Robertson<at>sta.uwi.edu
Elizabeth Vanacore, University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez; elizabeth.vanacore<at>upr.edu
Deadline for submission of manuscripts: 1 June 2022
We plan to publish the papers in an issue of BSSA that coincides with the Seismological Society of America’s planned meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in April 2023.
Papers submitted in advance of the deadline will be reviewed as they are received, and will be published online soon after they are accepted for publication in BSSA. In preparing manuscripts, authors must follow BSSA’s author guidelines at https://www.seismosoc.org/publications/bssa-submission-guidelines/. Papers must be submitted via BSSA’s online submission system (www.edmgr.com/bssa) under the category “Caribbean Special Section.”
Please address questions about scientific issues to the guest editors at their respective email addresses, or to Martin Mai, BSSA Editor-in-Chief, at bssaeditor<at>seismosoc.org. Submission-related questions should be addressed to Emily Hammond, BSSA Manuscript Coordinator, at bssamss<at>seismosoc.org.
