A major 7.7 earthquake occurred Tuesday 205 km (125 miles) west-northwest of Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia. The Indonesian region is one of the most seismically active zones of the earth. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in Baja California, approximately 75 km south of the Mexico-USA border. The earthquake occurred at shallow depth (approximately 10 km) along the boundary zone between the North American and Pacific plates.
