IRIS is pleased to announce that registration is now open for an optional field trip adjacent to the IRIS Workshop in June 2018.

The field trip will visit the nearby (~1 hour drive from Albuquerque) Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in the Jemez Volcanic field to look at pyroclastic volcanic deposits, hike through a slot canyon, and get an overview of the Rio Grande Rift. This trip will involve some light hiking. The field trip will be led and narrated by New Mexico State Geologist Dr. Nelia Dunbar.

More info on Tent Rocks National Monument can be found at www.blm.gov/visit/kktr.

• When: Monday, June 11, 2018 (the day prior to the start of the IRIS Workshop)
• Departure: 8:00am in front of the ABQ convention center west entrance
• Return: ~12:00pm to the ABQ convention center

The elevation at Kasha Katuwe ranges from 5,500 to 6,700 feet and we will hike to 6,700. It is a nice hike (3mi roundtrip) with a great view from the top. We will be in a national monument, so no hammering on rocks or collecting of materials. It will likely be quite warm (90+) by the time we leave the monument in the late morning. Make sure to bring sun protection (sunscreen, hats, etc.) and plenty of water.

Cost per person is $20 and covers:
• Admission to the monument
• Transportation to and from the monument
• Light snacks on the bus
• Extra water
**Please note that field trip fees are NON-REFUNDABLE**

We recommend you bring the following items with you:
• Food: Fruit will be available for participants on the bus
• Water: 2 liters of water. Bring your water bottles and fill them before departure or buy water before.
• Hiking boots and socks. Light hiking boots preferably with ankle protection
• Backpack to carry your belongings
• Sunscreen
• Sun-hat

Since the field trip departs early in the day (8am) on Monday, participants should plan to arrive in Albuquerque by the prior evening to avoid missing the bus. We will to return to the ABQ convention center by noon on Monday, allowing participants to return in time for any afternoon pre-workshop short courses that will be happening that day.
