I got it!! Very cool. My kids were so impressed with the Valentine's Day
Event.
Just as a side note, my superintendent was walking through the building and
had to come visit. He was at Bandon, OR on Sunday the 11th when we got our
"first quake" readings here in Vancouver, WA!! He was amazed with the
knowledge the 7th grade students had about seismology and "their"
seismograph:<)
Thank you over and over for letting us use the AS-1. What an incredible
learning tool for students, teachers ... an…

Reading about Portland... I guess my AS1 just came back to life too!...Now I
really need to understand what I get and also to what event it is related. I
will check the links of previous responce and will continue getting in
touch. Thank for your help. I guess this is just the beginning.

Here's a question that I received recently from a teacher in Portland:
>I finally got the seismometer up and running at the end of January
>and it has been running continuously since then. I keep seeing
>spikes with limited duration on the traces but have trouble tying
>them to events I get from USGS on earthquakes occurring globally. I

Many seismologists study "site response," which is the study of the way
shaking from an earthquake varies from place to place due to ground and soil
conditions. If you search the web
for: earthquake "site response" you will find
many pages on this topic, such as:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/research/groundmotion/field/duvall/
Hope this helps,
John

Is there any information about reseach done on earthquakes and relationship
with soil content in the area? Has someone done any work on these? Please e
mail with information if available.
Thanks

IRIS Teachers,
UCAR in Boulder, Colorado, is looking for teachers to help in
developing earthquake-related teaching resources. If you could
travel to Boulder for two weekends, this sounds like a great
opportunity to utilize the knowledge and expertise you've gained
through participation in the IRIS Seismographs in Schools program.
Cheers,
John
