RANONGGA, Solomon Islands (AFP) - The seismic jolt that unleashed the deadly
Solomons tsunami this week lifted an entire island metres out of the sea,
destroying some of the world's most pristine coral reefs.
In an instant, the grinding of the Earth's tectonic plates in the
8.0magnitude earthquake Monday forced the island of Ranongga up three
metres
(10 foot).
Submerged reefs that once attracted scuba divers from around the globe lie
exposed and dying after the quake raised the mountainous l…

The M8.1 April 1, 2007 Solomon Islands earthquake provides a good
opportunity to calculate the MS magnitude from your AS-1 seismogram. Or,
use the WLIN seismogram (shown in the attachment and available for
download at SpiNet, http://www.scieds.com/spinet/). If your station is
in the western US, an mb magnitude can also be calculated. For central
and eastern US stations, the first arrival is P-diffracted (see map of
theoretical travel times at:

Apparently Alan's site is blocked by some school filters! If so, you
can see Alan's records on this page as well.

We picked up the surface waves from one of these, and I was remarking this morning that to see a low 6 from that distance it must be the filters. Very good. Unfortunately, Alan's site is blocked by our school's internet filter. Geology is obsene to some...;)

Re: Another example of the advantages of filtering -- new web site - Alan Jones - 2007-04-05 03:22:52
Earlier John Lahr showed how filtering can make it easy to detect earthquakes. Here's another example.
Check out the two images. They show three earthquakes in the last 24 hours.

The filtering is the same as John Lahr commonly uses. You can hardly see the earthquakes until you turn on the filtering.
This is cool. I was able to do this from home because of a beta version of AmaSeis I am using. The…

A large earthquake occured in the South Pacific. The IRIS Educational record pages show it as the waves are coming in now.
