Research & Development Engineer 2/3 (7119U/7120U) 22063

Main Campus-Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley, is one of the world’s most iconic teaching and research institutions. Since 1868, Berkeley has fueled a perpetual renaissance, generating unparalleled intellectual, economic and social value in California, the United States and the world. Berkeley’s culture of openness, freedom and acceptance—academic and artistic, political and cultural—make it a very special place for students, faculty and staff.Berkeley is committed to hiring and developing staff who want to work in a high performing culture that supports the outstanding work of our faculty and students. In deciding whether to apply for a staff position at Berkeley, candidates are strongly encouraged to consider the alignment of the Berkeley Workplace Culture with their potential for success at http://jobs.berkeley.edu/why-berkeley.html.

Berkeley Seismological Lab (BSL) operates more than 70 off campus, unmanned geophysical observatories throughout central and northern California and one observatory in southern Oregon. There are three main aspects handled by the BSL technical staff: 1) location, permitting, planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure, sensors, and data acquisition systems at remote sites; 2) continuous, near real-time telemetry of data from the remote sites to the Berkeley campus, and 3) data qualification and quality control including instrumentation setup and initial verification of frequency and phase response.

Responsibilities
BSL engineers are required in most cases to make telephone contact with landowners of the properties upon which the instruments are installed. In this manner, the engineers represent the entire University of California, the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory, and themselves. BSL engineers are expected to exercise independent thinking and judgment that similarly titled counterparts on campus may not encounter. There is no direct evaluation or oversight of the off campus work or installations by researcher, professor, or academic investigator. Evaluation of the engineers' off-campus work is only indirectly possible by evaluation of resultant data. Due to the remote nature of the seismic installations, data from the off-campus sites is telemetered to Berkeley and distributed from the Berkeley Data Center via the world wide web to researchers and institutions world-wide. The efforts of staff researchers in Berkeley and world-wide are highly dependent on the data from the off campus sites and therefore of the BSL engineers. At the professional level 2, this work involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Engineering Technicians may be assigned duties within a single discipline (e.g., electrical) or span a range of disciplines At the professional Level 3, the R&D Engineer is responsible for work that Involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation
