Starting salary:
GS-11: $66,137 (Step 1)
GS-12: $79,272 (Step 1)

USGS is seeking a scientific professional to manage and lead technical planning, testing and implementation of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system. ShakeAlert is a mission-critical, geographically distributed system with processing centers in Seattle, Berkeley, Menlo Park and Pasadena. The main testing and monitoring center is in Pasadena.

Applicants who have experience leading scientific development and operations projects in a real-time Linux environment will receive consideration for this opportunity. Languages used include Java, C++, and Python. Please, apply only if you have experience that is relevant to this opportunity.

DUTIES
- Provides technical input to the design and implementation of the ShakeAlert system including the overall system architecture and the interaction of its various modules to ensure optimal performance.

- Provides technical leadership and manages the ShakeAlert testing and certification platform. Plans, organizes, and directs tests of new or modified components of the ShakeAlert system to certify their suitability for inclusion in the production system.
- Responsible for the organization and management of the ShakeAlert system’s code management and distribution process including a code repository, version management, code builds, run-time configurations, and metadata.

- Provides technical leadership and manages ongoing performance monitoring of the ShakeAlert production system.

- Provides scientific and technical input to the establishment and application of performance standards for the ShakeAlert system and its components.

- Guides high-level technical work performed by IT specialists, scientists and others. Plans and prioritizes work to be performed by both USGS and cooperator personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

For GS-11: Three years of graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in physical or computer science or other directly related field of study OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

For GS-12: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

For GS-13: One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
