Hello everyone!

To jump on the AGU session announcement bandwagon (as always, apologies for multiple postings), please consider submitting your abstract to session S037: Seismic anisotropy and deformation in the continental crust.

This interdisciplinary session brings together seismic-, laboratory-, and field-based studies to improve our understanding of the composition, structure, and deformation of the continental crust.

Conveners: Sarah Brownlee (Wayne State University) and Vera Schulte-Pelkum (University of Colorado, Boulder)

Invited speakers are: Jeffrey Park (Yale University) and Bjarne Almqvist (Uppsala University)

Session Description:
Seismic anisotropy in the continental crust has many causes, including oriented cracks, layering, and preferred crystallographic orientation of minerals. If crustal rock properties and their expressions in seismic data are well characterized, then observations of seismic anisotropy can be used to better understand the composition, structure, and deformation of the continental crust, which will be particularly useful in the deeper parts of the crust. We invite contributions focused on characterizing seismic anisotropy in the continental crust using multiple methods, including seismic methods (e.g. receiver functions, surface waves, shear-wave splitting, local earthquakes), laboratory methods (e.g. ultrasonic velocity measurements) and texture-determination methods (e.g. EBSD, X-Ray goniometry). We also invite contributions in deformation and shear localization, particularly as a bridge between microstructure and seismic wavelengths. Our aim is to have a highly interdisciplinary session in which seismic-, laboratory-, and field-based disciplines share knowledge with each other to improve our understanding of the continental crust.

Abstracts are due August 2nd.

We look forward to seeing you in New Orleans!
