Project scientist in Seismology
for a contribution to a seismometer experiment on Mars
The MPS (http://www.mps.mpg.de) has contributed the leveling system to the SEIS instrument, a broadband seismometer that will be deployed by the NASA mission InSight (http://insight.jpl.nasa.gov/home.cfm) on the surface of Mars. The mission has been launched and the landing is scheduled for 26 November 2018.
The successful applicant holds a PhD degree in geophysics, physics, or a related field. She or he has a good knowledge of seismology in general and is familiar with seismic instrumentation. Applicants must be able to lead a scientific project and to work in an international team of scientists and engineers. Aside from assisting in the operation of the instrument the successful applicant will be involved in the analysis and interpretation of the data in coordination with the international team.
InSight is led by the USA and restrictions may apply for nationals of certain countries.
The salary will be according to group E13 in the salary scheme of the Federal German public service. In case of exceptional experience and expertise, salary group E14 would be possible.
The starting date can be 1 October 2018 or later. The contract will be limited until 30 June 2021. In case of an extension of the InSight mission an extension of the contract is possible.
