About the Organization:
The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI; www.dal.ca/ofi), the National Facility for Seismic Imaging (NFSI), and the Department of Earth Sciences at Dalhousie University are looking to establish a major new facility of Broadband Ocean Bottom Seismometers (BBOBS) that will be used by a consortium of 10 universities across Canada for studies of earthquakes and structures of western, northern and eastern Canada and on international studies worldwide.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Marine Data Technologist will support new and ambitious projects centered on remote probing of the seabed and carried out as part of the OFI research network, with particular focus on the NFSI seagoing program. The incumbent will also support the development, deployment, and analysis of a network of seismic sensors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, operate and maintain a marine database of seismological and other measurements on the Compute Canada network.
- Precondition, format, assess, document and package data for computer analysis. Archive data as required.
- Conduct and analyse sensor calibration measurements, and maintain up-to-date calibration information for all NFSI instrumentation.
- Regularly consult with the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System on data management, access and archiving. Facilitate access of collected raw data, metadata and research results to end users.
- Liaisie with NFSI and other data users to determine and support their data and software needs, including design of graphical interfaces for newly developed software.
- Support and participate in NFSI and other OFI fieldwork operations.
Note:
-Due to the nature of this position, must be able to lift up to 20 kg.
-Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Nova Scotia drivers license.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in geophysics, computer science or engineering with approximately 2 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Programming and database administration experience preferred. Demonstrated experience in at least one programming language (e.g., C, python, R, MATLAB) and web development coding standards is required. Must be familiar with operating systems (e.g. Linux, OS X, Windows) including system administration, software installation and updates, etc. Experience preparing and deploying scientific equipment is a strong asset. Ability to work at sea, including passing a physical examination for MED A3 training is required. Must possess strong attention to detail and have excellent communication skills (written and oral).
