The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill University invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Researcher position in earthquake mechanics beginning Fall 2020. The Researcher will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists to improve understanding of the causes and controls on induced earthquakes to assist industry regulators to build proactive hazard mitigation strategies.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include experimental characterization of the frictional and poroelastic properties of reservoir rocks from northern British Columbia and fault stability analysis through numerical modeling based on the experimental results. Experiments will be conducted in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in geomechanics, fault mechanics, earthquake seismology, or a related subject. Candidates should have strong mathematical/numerical skills. Experience with laboratory measurements of rock physical properties or frictional behaviour is preferred.

Applications must include: 1) a cover letter outlining the candidate’s academic qualifications and professional experiences, motivation, and how they will bring value to project goals; 2) a current curriculum vitae; 3) two letters of recommendation that support the candidate’s application, and 4) a copy of university transcript(s).

For full consideration, please submit your application electronically in PDF format by email to james.kirkpatrick<at>mcgill.ca.
