NORSAR has extensive experience in array seismology, microseismic monitoring and ray-tracing technology. We are seeking candidates for a permanent position in the research and development project team for seismology. This team delivers projects funded by clients such as the Research Council of Norway, EU, U.S. DOE and industry clients in addition to the mission on behalf of Norway on compliance to the nuclear test ban treaty. Embedded in these project activities is the scientific development of software solutions, machine learning and possible commercialization.

The seismologists are working closely with the microseismic team developing methods and work processes to be used in different applications and industrial segments. The core of the seismology project contains advanced array processing methodologies for event detection and thus compliance monitoring to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Other major portfolio segments are connected to projects concerning the safe storage of CO2 as well as different applications of fibreoptic technology. The work tasks include the development of novel monitoring methods and workflows and optimizing monitoring design. Other activities are linked to earthquake hazard and risk assessments as well as monitoring of unstable rock slopes.

The work involves cooperation with active customers and external research institutions in Norway and abroad. A primary objective is the further development of detection seismology in combination with machine learning for effective and accurate event detection and location. Skills needed include the capacity to investigate the use of array seismological methods to characterize, and potentially differentiate, the internal structure of natural and induced fracture networks. The candidate will need to be able to relocate seismicity, determine source parameters and mechanisms, and thereupon, derive event characteristics.

Required skills and experiences:

general seismic waveform processing / signal processing
knowledge of earthquake location methodology
knowledge of programming (e.g. python, C/C++, matlab, or others)
experience of managing projects and teams

Desired additional skills and experiences:

5-10 years of work experience
Experience from acquiring projects
International networking

The right candidate will be a good communicator with great presentation skills, with the ability to both collaborate in a team and independently solve assignments. The candidate needs to be fluent in English, written and spoken, and good Norwegian language skills are an advantage.

We offer:

A very diverse and challenging job within an international team of young and experienced researchers. We offer flexible working conditions and competitive terms.

Candidates may be requested to pass professional selection procedures. Applications with documentation of competence, experience and letter of motivation, including contacts to references, should be sent electronically to careers<at>norsar.no as soon as possible and no later than October 15th 2021.

Interested candidates may obtain additional information by contacting Dr. Volker Oye, volker<at>norsar.no
