Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a potentially transformative technology in the geosciences and engineering. The rapidly increasing interest in DAS arises from its use in continuous arrays that can be kilometers in length while providing spatial resolution of meters and frequency response from millihertz to kilohertz. This mailing list provides a forum for discussion on all topics related to DAS technology including: applications, installation, data acquisition, handling and processing of data, engineering and scientific technical development, and advertisement of upcoming events, workshops, meetings, or other opportunities in the DAS community.

Good morning / afternoon / evening! I hope this email finds you well. This is just a very quick message to promote a DAS-focused PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds, as part of our NERC PANORAMA Doctoral Training Programme. The proposed project uses DAS to look at landslide initiation, in partnership with the British Geological Survey (BGS) and industrial partners RSK Geophysics. The student will have access to Leeds' own interrogators, and can access existing data from BGS's Hollin H… [more]

Symposium on “Advances in earthquake and explosion monitoring using Distributed Acoustic Sensing” at IUGG 11-20 July 2023 in Berlin (https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/). Abstract submission deadline is 14 February 2023. Author notification of acceptance/rejection is 17 March 2023. Fundamental differences exist between DAS measurements and traditional seismometers. DAS measures strain or strain rate whereas seismometers measure particle velocity. Furthermore, DAS measures deformation at metre-scale… [more]
