Dear colleagues,
On Saturday evening on the 17th of June, 2017, a large landslide occurred in NW Greenland, around 20km from the small fishing village of Nuugaatsiaq. Shortly afterwards, waves inundated much of the village, producing widespread destruction - 11 houses were swept out to sea, and 4 people are missing; in total 200 people have been evacuated from 3 villages in the region. Last month, the Trump Administration released the details of the President’s budget request to Congress for fiscal year (FY) 2018. As you know, this budget includes severe cuts to research and development (R&D) across the majority of federal agencies. The David Simpson Fund for Innovation was established in 2014 to provide the IRIS Consortium with a source of un-restricted funds that the IRIS Board of Directors can designate to support new initiatives or activities, increase community outreach, or leverage development of new resources for Consortium programs.
